MHX S-Glass Rod Blanks

Product Details

MHX S-Glass Blanks

MHX has updated the traditional S-Glass woven fabric and incorporated a new hardened resin system, while also updating the finish to a translucent caramel color. These blanks now have much smaller diameters in both the butt and tip sections, are more responsive, and provide superb sensitivity. The soft tip flex of these models are awesome for crankbait, chatterbait, top water and live bait applications!

Individual Serial Numbers

Once they have passed the quality control stage, each MHX blank is assigned an individual serial number. This assures that every MHX rod you build, fish, buy or sell can be tracked throughout it’s life cycle from end to end with no concern about warranty issues.

Limited Lifetime Warranty

Each rod blank can be registered online with its individual serial number by either the custom rod builder or the end user of the rod. When registered, the blanks unique serial number identifies that rod blank to registrant. If the registrant sells or gives the rod blank or finished rod to another person, the warranty can be transferred to the new owner – an industry first.

Makes a nice cranking rod, but...

This blank is what I was looking for - a fiberglass blank with a deep bend under load. Yep, it'll bend clear down to the butt under load. The blank is light for a piece of fiberglass, but...

The rod's weight with my ancient old metal spinning reel positioned where I wanted it was very tip-biased. I added a significant amount of weight to the butt of the finished rod to bring the balance point back to a few inches in front of the reel stem. So much or the light weight... No biggy though, I'm no weight weenie. The balance lets me cast and retrieve lures for hours on end with no issue.

The rod excels at its intended task and, bonus, is surprisingly great as a general-purpose rod for me. Those of you younguns that grew up with and are accustomed only to fast and x-fast graphite rods may not appreciate this heavier, more "noodly" blank. It's not one of the old buggy-whips, but there's a lot of flex in this baby.

Sensitivity is great; I can feel when a 2.5" smelt nibbles, feel its high-speed wiggle / tail beat when it's hooked. I wasn't expecting that from a fiberglass rod rated for 10-17lb line.

Relevant build info follows.

Blank: MHX SSP845, 10-17lb 3/8 - 3/4oz MF H
Reel seat: Fuji NPS, size 18
Guides: Pac Bay Minima TV, SV, F, and PT
Paired reel: Greenie Penn Spinfisher 710, spooled with 50 yards of 15lb mono as a top shot, followed by a bunch of braid and a little Dacron.

A 3/4oz Krokodile will regularly cast beyond my 50 yard mono top shot.

I like the way it feels and sets up. I love a good glass rod for deep cranking.

S-Glass rod blank

I like the color of the blank but I had some issues right away. A standard size 16 reel seat will only slid down to about a foot away from the bottom of the blank because of how big the diameter is of the lower section of the rod blank. It was also difficult to ream out the lower cork section of the handle to make it fit. Plus I had to turn some custom wood and cork rings to make up the difference, as the stock cork lower section wasn’t long enough because of that. And boy it that blank heavy in weight compared to a carbon fiber rod blank. But I kind of expected that but it still took me by surprise.
Here in Minnesota, it will be a couple of months yet before I get a chance to use it but I am hoping that it will work better for crank bait fishing than my other rods.
