Building On A Budget

Building On A Budget

With all the incredible products and resources here at Mud Hole it can be a hobbyist’s toy store. Build your own fishing rod and take it fishing? More and more anglers are jumping at this opportunity to become better anglers through their gear.

Well, if you get our emails, you know we run pretty good sales. It does not stop there. Do not forget we have a clearance section, which is quite good. Honestly, it is incredible right now, which is why you are getting a blog on this. Yes, it fluctuates throughout the year depending on when new products drop, or we find overstock items from some of the biggest names in rod building. Right now, we are seeing the perfect storm in the clearance section. It is the beginning of the new year so we are making room for new products, we have adjusted some of the brands (read about that here) and we got ahold of some great OEM products! Good news for y’all.

Let’s dive into the Clearance section and build some incredible custom rods on a budget.

Follow the red arrow above to the clearance section. Yes, there are hundreds of products currently discounted in that section. Click the sale icon from the home page.

Im just going to dive in on some of my favorites in there right now. Granted, this is live so things sell out quickly. Starting with rod blanks, many of the Bushido line of blanks have moved to MHX but there are some great ones in the clearance section.

My first pick would be from the Spin jig series. From freshwater to light inshore there are currently 8 models available that would make for an incredible spinning rod or even a light weight casting rod. From weightless plastics to small swimbaits or crossing over using it in the salt for smaller walking baits like a mirrolure, this series would get my vote.

Time to grab some guides. There is an incredible selection from casting to spinning even offshore roller guides, fly guide sets and tip tops! Again, this doesn't happen often but right now there is something in that section for everyone!

I will admit, I can be partial to certain components and this is one of those times. Mud Hole has OEM high-frames and the matching running guides in the clearance section. I almost do not want to tell everyone but these are too good to keep to myself. As an example here would be a set I would wrap on the Bushido Spin Jig SJ68/6-10. I would run 20H, 12H, 6L and then size 5 or 5.5 runners out. I fish either a size 2500 or 3000 spinning reel for my bass and flats inshore fishing with this exact guide train.

Reel seats can always depend on personal preference but not often does Mud Hole have over 40 reels seats in clearance. Check out the CRB premium graphite seat in the graphic above, $1.55...what?!?! That is more than building on a budget, professional rod building should be paying attention too! Stock up. In addition to your standard barrel spinning seats you will also find some cool American Tackle G2 seats, all aluminum saltwater seats and even high end fly seats.

Paring your reel seat with grips can be as easy as choosing what you like but sometimes it pays to get a little creative. If we are staying with the maximizing our build while keeping the tightest budget possible I will stay with the standard barrel seat I mentioned above as use the 1.8" Light Composite Cork Fore Grips on either side of the seat as a fore and rear grip. It really looks good, and there is enough cork on the top and bottom so your hand does not feel like it is slipping off the grip.

If you want to get a little creative and had your eye on the award winning Tsuka 2 Carbon Handle this might be a good time to grab one. With the high end OEM guides and a great Bushido blank it would be fitting to add the Tsuka 2.  Plus, you are already saving big money by choosing all other components in the clearance section, splurge on that carbon handle. It is Rod Builder Math!

Now that you have everything you need to build a top tier custom rod on a budget add some decorative pieces to make it pop. Don't worry we have that in the clearance section too. You will find Rod Skinz, Trim Rings, and other items to make that custom rod your own.

Before you go, I would be remiss if I did not mention a hook keeper. We have those in the clearance section as well! We have the classic stainless steel hook keepers or the CRB Drop Shot Hook Keeper Assortment Kit.
