Add this Custom Offshore Rod to Your List

Offshore anglers can be categorized in two ways. They're either into sportfishing or meat fishing.

The good news, Slow Pitch Jigging can cover both!

Although most angling rod builders must choose a type of fishing, a species of fish and the lure to target that fish before building a rod, slow pitch is simplified. You have a Jig of varying weights that the angler matches to the rod model and corresponds to the water depth. That’s it!

Well, it is a little more in depth than that but not much. Let’s get into it.

It is hard to beat that thump of a solid bite. The best part about slow pitch jigging is you are always in control of the lure. Making a subtle change can be the difference between a bite or striking out. With Slow Pitch jigging one thing remains constant, you must have the right rod for the job.

Unlike some other applications where you can throw multiple types of lures or even live bait with the same rod...Slow Pitch, is very unique. Built either spinning or casting, they have one job, to present that jig so it resembles a wounded or dying baitfish.

First, you figure out the water depth you will be fishing. Are you in 200’ over a wreck or a rock pile in 100’? The weight of the jig, measured in grams, should match the depth you are fishing. Yes, there are variables like current but as a general rule, if you are fishing 200 feet of water you will be using a 200 gram jig.

For the rod blank, they are rated based on the jig weight. So, for example, the MHX Slow Pitch Blank XJSP731M is rated for a 200 gram jig. Each rod can effectively fish a jig with about 20% weight variability. Which means you can typically fish a range of jigs from 160g-240g on a rod rated for a 200 gram jig.

MHX does also provide line ratings, but trust us, it is all about the jig weight. Slow pitch anglers use both spinning and conventional reels loaded with 30-50lb braided line and fluorocarbon leaders of 30lb-60lb for most applications. Sometimes a short wire leader trace is added above the jig if toothy critters are around but, in most situations, not necessary.

Notice we haven’t spoken about what fish you will be targeting. That is the best part, these slow pitch jigs catch everything.

From Pelagic species like Tuna, Kingfish and Amberjack to Demersal species like Grouper and Snapper, these blanks in the Offshore Jigging Series will prove to be the tool every Slow Pitch angler needs.
